  • CSCS Terminal Services

CSCS now provides beta access to a Windows 2003 terminal server from all Linux workstations. This allows a user to open up a session on a windows server that enables access to applications such as MS Office. Additionally, your home directory can be accessed via the H: drive.

Please click on the above image for a larger view.

NOTE: Please be aware that anything saved on your desktop or in "My Documents" will not be backed up. Your H: drive is backed up as this is your normal Linux home directory. If you want CSCS computer support to map "My Documents" to a directory in your Linux home directory, please include this request in your access request email.

To request access to this service, please email cscs.admins@umich.edu.

NOTE: From time to time, we may need to install new applications or patches that may require a reboot. Sometimes a critical update or patch may need to be installed. We ask that the time from 2am-4am every day of the week be reserved for potential system reboots and other types of system work. Thanks

    Instructions:
    1. Login to any Linux workstation and run the command rdesktop terra Please note that you can not resize this window. To start with a larger window, such as 1024 by 768, run "rdesktop -g 1024x768 terra".
    2. A windows 2003 login screen will appear, enter your username and password.
    3. You can access applications just as if you were sitting at a windows 2003 computer.
    4. When you are done, choose "shutdown" from the start menu, and select "Log off 'your username'".

Password Change Instructions: If you want to change your password, you will need to change it on the Samba server. To change it on the Samba server, use "ssh" to connect to cscs01.cscs.lsa.umich.edu and run the command "smbpasswd". We strongly recommend using your normal Linux password.

If you have comments, problems, or application install requests, please send us an email to the email adress listed above. Thanks.
